Temperature and strain discriminating sensor based on the monitoring of cladding modes of a single femtosecond inscribed grating

چکیده
In this paper we demonstrate a simple temperature and strain discriminating sensor based on a single fibre Bragg grating inscribed by a femtosecond laser via the point-by-point technique. These gratings exhibit strong and extensive cladding mode structures and by simultaneously monitoring both the Bragg wavelength and a cladding mode spaced by ~ 40 nm from the Bragg peak, as a function of both temperature and strain, it is possible to distinguish between the two effects and potentially obtain and increased sensitivity over prior reports for similar systems. In preliminary experiments the two parameters were determined with an accuracy of 1°C and 40 με respectively. Due to the close spectral separation of the two peaks that were monitored, quick and simultaneously measurements of the two parameters was possible, allowing for real time measurements of the temperature and strain and making the device practical for use in various applications.

Negative axial strain sensitivity in gold-coated eccentric fiber Bragg gratings
New dual temperature and strain sensor has been designed using eccentric second-order fiber Bragg gratings produced in standard single-mode optical fiber by point-by-point direct writing technique with tight focusing of 800 nm femtosecond laser pulses. With thin gold coating at the grating location, we experimentally show that such gratings exhibit a transmitted amplitude spectrum composed by t...

A simple and compact reflective refractometer based on a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) inscribed in an ultra-high photon-sensitive thin-core fiber is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The reflective refractometer utilizes a short piece of thin-core fiber containing one TFBG to ensure the recoupling of cladding modes. The reflection spectra occur in two well-defined wavelength bands ...

Fiber Bragg grating is inscribed on microfiber with femtosecond laser pulses irradiation. The microfiber is fabricated by stretching a section of single mode fiber over a flame. Periodic grooves are carved on the microfiber by the laser as have been observed experimentally. The microfiber Bragg grating is demonstrated for temperature and strain sensing, and the strain sensitivity is improved wi...
متن کاملOrientation-Dependent Displacement Sensor Using an Inner Cladding Fiber Bragg Grating
An orientation-dependent displacement sensor based on grating inscription over a fiber core and inner cladding has been demonstrated. The device comprises a short piece of multi-cladding fiber sandwiched between two standard single-mode fibers (SMFs). The grating structure is fabricated by a femtosecond laser side-illumination technique. Two well-defined resonances are achieved by the downstrea...
